2x

faster access to results

The Problem

Design debt led to less impact

Most teachers visited the product only twice a year. This was our largest user segment and the most likely to drop off or misunderstand their survey results. Features we shipped the prior year piled on new barriers to accessing results.

FullStory user observation

We used FullStory to observe users navigating the current experience.

Customer feedback

We analyzed support tickets and user feedback together, then addressed many of them with a single systems-level change.

User flow analysis

Mapping the existing user flow revealed unnecessary complexity and nested navigation.

How might we remove barriers and communicate results more clearly?

The Redesign

Introducing a Better Way

Just show me my results

We put insights earlier in the user flow and addressed issues that caused excessively long reports.

Pages to be removed from the flow

We identified and removed unnecessary pages that created barriers to accessing survey results.

Actionable visualizations

Showing scores alongside trends and benchmarks gave results the context they needed.

Results UI with visualizations

Survey results with actionable data visualizations and benchmarks.

A seamless path to insights

See how a user can now log in and reach their data in seconds—with results that are easy to read.

A simpler information architecture (IA)

I dug into the codebase to find a solution engineering could build. Geoffrey, the tech lead, proved it out with a coded prototype before we committed.

Before IA diagram

Before

Multiple nested concepts created pages that users couldn't easily find.

After IA diagram

After

We merged project types and respondents onto a single page. Combining template surveys was a stretch goal—the investment outweighed available resources.

The Impact

25%

decrease in drop offs

Users accessed their report results 2x faster, and we saw a measurable rise in NPS ratings.
